Basic Equipment – The Microphone

Starting in this series, Basic Equipment, I’ll assemble a podcast rig from scratch. The things I’ll mention will be, in no particular order, microphone, microphone stands, cables, headphones, computer audio interface, recording software, live caller software, hand-held recorders, encoders, etc.

So let’s start things off at the mouth, the microphone. Everywhere I read people recommend the Shure SM-58. These microphones are the standard for live performance and recording. They also cost around $100 each. If you’re just getting into podcasting, I don’t think you need to spend that much. The microphone I’m recommending is the Behringer XM8500 (See link below). This microphone sound every bit as good as the Shure at 1/4 the cost. It has a 2-stage pop filter that minimizes breath and pop noises, which for the new podcaster will come in quite handy and won’t sound like you’re making an obscene phone call. But just in case, pick up a Foam Windscreen for your microphone (See link below).

The next time I’ll get into the computer audio interface, ie. getting the output from that nice new microphone into the computer.
