Basic Equipment - The Mixer

This is the fourth post in this series, Basic Equipment. In this series, I’ll assemble a podcast rig from scratch. Last time I recommended a set of headphones, the Sennheiser HD-280, in my opinion, the best headphones for the money. In this post we’re going to discuss an addition to your podcast rig that will add a lot of flexibility, the Mixer.

There may be a time in the future when you want to have two, three or more microphones for guests on your podcast. You may want to have an external player to pump music into your podcast as you record live. What ever the reason, when you want more than two inputs, you’re going to need a mixer.

The Behringer line of mixers runs the spectrum from the very small to the very large. The one that I recommend is the Eurorack MXB1002 (See link below) 10 channel mixer. That’s a lot of channels, and you might think you don’t need that many…but wait, there’s more. This mixer is also capable of running off of battery power, freeing you up to take it on remote podcasts (I have heard podcasts where they would have been better off with one of these than how they recorded).

The output of this mixer would plug nicely into the Left and Right inputs of the Tascam US-122 USB computer audio interface to expand the available ports. To do that , you’ll want to get a couple TRS (Tip Ring Shield) cable (See link below). You could also run from the RCA jacks on the MXB1002 to the 3.5mm jack of your computer or into a device like the Griffin iMic (See link below) with an adapter like the one pictured below and a good RCA cable (See link below).

That’s a lot of links! Check ‘em out.
