Interviews using Telephone instead of Skype

Most podcasters that conduct interviews do so via Skype. Not all interviewees are able to use Skype. When this situation presents itself, there are a couple of alternatives. First, while listening to Podcast411, one of the promos was from Michael Torino of the Digital Media Cast Experiment. The promo included a recording that was made over the telephone and recorded on the computer. There is a PDF document that shows how to create one of these device at the website.

This weekend I created an Old School Telephone Interface with parts completely from Radio Shack. The OSTI 8-1000 plugs into an available phone jack on one end and to an audio in port on your mixer or computer audio interface on the other end. Using your recording software, you’re able to record your phone interview with any person regardless of location, though tolls will apply. Here is the link to the PDF:

The device worked great and produced pretty good quality audio.

The second alternative is almost the exact same device in a commercial version. Called a Mini Recorder Control, this device from Radio Shack, allows you the same functionality as the OSTI. Head over to The MacCast and listen to Adam’s interview with Leo Laporte to hear the quality of these devices in action.

If you have that D.I.Y. spirit, get the parts and build your own. Radio shack has all the parts to make your own for less than the cost of the already build Mini Recorder Control and you’ll have the ability to include a ¼ jack on your own unit for connecting to your podcast rig.

Good Luck!!
