Basic Equipment - Software

This is the Seventh post in this series, Basic Equipment. In this series, I’ll assemble a podcast rig from scratch.

Last time I recommended a Mic stand, (I think I did, it’s been so damn long since I’ve posted on Basic Equipment). This time we’ll dive into the topic of audio software to record your podcast.

When it comes to software to record your podcasts, there are more choices than you can wave the proverbial stick at. Instead of giving only one recommendation, I’ll be saying one sentence about each solution, in several categories, that I’ve seen. At the end, I’ll tell you which one I recommend at the moment

Free Software
Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) Great FREE open source software, multi track editor, software compressor.
Acid Xpress (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/download/freestuff.asp) Teaser to buy full Acid program, but can work.
Garageband (http://www.apple.com/ilife/garageband) Don’t have a Mac, but Rob @ Podcast 411 uses this for his podcast.
PodProducer (http://radix.com.mx/podproducer/en/index.html) Tried it and didn’t like it so much, but works.

My choice: Audacity

Commercial Software
Acid (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com) Historically for creating electronic music with loops, but has great editing capabilities and multitrack editing function as well as software effects, including a compressor.
Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition/main.html) Haven’t used, but Leo Laporte of This Week in Tech, among other endeavors, uses this for multitrack recording.
SoundForge (http://www.sonymediasoftware.com) Works well, reminds me of Audacity.
ePodcast Creater/Producer (http://www.industrialaudiosoftware.com) Neat little programs for recording your podcast live with a slider to change between sources.
Cast Blaster (http://www.castblaster.com) Don’t know, C.C. Chapman of Accident Hash, among others, use this program. Works on Windows XP only, bummer.
MixCast Live (http://www.mixcastlive.com) Create show notes, publish feed, and record your podcast. Haven’t used yet. Testing.
Propaganda (http://www.makepropaganda.com) Haven’t used yet, looks impressive. Testing.
WebPod Studio (http://www.lionhardt.ca/wps) Haven’t used yet, has a big feature list. Testing

My choice: Acid

The number of podcast recording software is growing. I heard that the next version of Windows, Vista, will contain a podcast recording application. Look for the podcast directories to explode with exponential growth as the millions of Windows users get their podcast in-the-can with the included FREE software.

Meanwhile, if this list isn’t big enough for you, try this search on Google and check out one of the 861,000 links.
