Searching for Podcast Information

When people search for information on podcasting equipment, they often end up here on The Podcast Studio. The search terms vary wildly. The largest number of searchers are searching for a “podcast kit” or “podcast studio” or the ever popular “podcast equipment”, but the thing a lot of people are looking for is a particular answer to a particular problem they’re having. Take the search that showed up recently in the logs from a reader in the UK, “connecting sm58 to iriver“, brings you to my site, but I don’t have that particular solution listed anywhere on my blog, until today.

The SM58 microphone has a balanced XLR connector. Tthe first step in getting the output to the iRiver is something like the ART XLR Female to 1/4 Male Stereo Adapter. Now that you’re in stereo, you need to get down to 1/8″ to input into the iRiver. Enter the Planet Waves 1/8″ to 1/4″ adapter. This series of adapters should get your SM58 talking to your iRiver. (Make sure that you tell the iRiver that you have an external microphone attached instead of a line-in signal otherwise you won’t be hearing anything.)

While I have not verified that the 1/8″ connector will actually fit into the iRiver’s incredibly small opening, the type of connectors is correct if not the form factor. In the past I’ve also picked up an XLR Female to 1/8″ stereo adapter from my local guitar shop. Another great alternative is to give the guys at Giant Squid Audi Lab a call to have them build you a custom cable. I purchased an omni-directional lapel mic for my iRiver and the price was very reasonable and the quality is great.

I’m going to be taking a look at the logs and posting up some solutions to the problems that people are having in setting up their podcast studio. If you have a problem that you want solved, send an e-mail to podcaststudio@gmail.com and I’ll see what I can do to help.

Peace,
Russ
