Questions & Answers #3
A reader came to The Podcast Studio by searching for “portable podcasting studio“. Good thought. I haven’t really explored the portable podcasting gear space except to mention the iRiver 700 series of portable recorders/mp3 players. Last night, Craig Patchett of Behind the Scenes recorded some interviews at the OC Podcaster Meetup. He busted out his mobile gear, a Sennheiser microphone, headphones and a Marantz PMD-660. The PMD660 has some impressive specs for a portable recorder:
- Uses inexpensive, widely available CompactFlash media (CF)
- Operates for 4 hours on four AA batteries
- 2 XLR mic connections with +48v phantom power
- 2 built-in condenser mics for easy, true stereo recordings
- Stereo line I/O
- No moving parts or maintenance 99 virtual tracks for fast playback access
- USB port for fast file transfer
Nice and small. When you look at the picture, the unit seems like it would be larger than it is. I was surprised by how truly small the unit is and by how light. The PMD660 comes with a USB cable, 64MB CF card, an AC adapter, audio cable and a carrying strap. Here are the links to check out the PMD660 and the complete recording package from Marantz.
Get out of the house and start podcasting!
