The End of a Podcasting Era

And I was just getting started. I happen to agree with the premise of meat of the article. The title is more doom and gloom than the rest of the article. What I’ve noticed is that someone starting to podcast with more grand ideas than just the pure enjoyment of doing a podcast is going to be disappointed.

Fact no. 1, you’re not going to have thousands of listeners. After almost a year of podcasting on the Fat Guy Radio show, the numbers are decent, but not staggering. I’m not raking in the dough, I’m not an advertising juggernaut. I’m hopefully helping a few people get healthier.

That leads to fact no. 2, you better have a good reason to podcast (and to make money is not one of them.) If the show breaks even, or feeds my audio gear habit, I’m more than excited and so is my wife. But I didn’t get into it for the money, I hoped to build a community around the show and help people lose weight. So far that’s working out alright, it’s just going slower than I’d hoped.  If you don’t garner huge audience, then there could be lots of reasons, marketing, subject, directory placement, audio quality, talent…ouch.  If you’re looking for fame, rather than fortune, you’re probably not going to find that in podcasting either.

Fact no. 3, ah forget it, check out the article for more…

Russ…these are all really good points. I think you have the right approach to it. That’s the way I have looked at it from day one, as well. I’ve been happy if I get a little feedback now and then. :)
