My Next Mixer: Alesis MultiMix 8 Firewire
I’ve been recording a lot of Skype conversations. Particularly I record each episode of Fat 2 Fit Radio by means of Skype every week. Jeff Ainslie, my co-host, calls in from Calgary, Alberta (that’s in Canada). I record both my voice and his on separate left and right channels of my current mixer. It works famously, except when I want to add the third audio source. Whether it’s an audio clip that I’m playing, or we’re talking about having a guest on to talk about certain topics. I am faced with the dilemma of having two voices on the same channel. While not the end of the world, having each person on their own recorded channel makes cleaning up one person’s audio much easier without disturbing the audio from the other person. Blah, blah, blah. Any way, I’m getting a new mixer to combat this problem. I’ve been wanting it for the longest time, but I couldn’t justify it with making almost no money podcasting. I’ve already broke about even on my current equipment and hosting fees, almost. But now my current rig is holding me back. So to fix this shortcoming in my podcast rig, I’m buying the Alesis MultiMix 8 FireWire 8-Channel Analog Mixer. This is the same mixer that comes as part of the Alesis Podcast Kit. With this mixer I will be able to record 8 channels of audio to the computer and have each isolated on it’s own channel for later cleaning, if needed, or editing.
This is the right mixer for me, it fixes a lot of shortcomings in my current setup. What holes do you have in your podcast rig that are holding you back? Are you doing something strange that would be fixed by an upgraded piece of equipment? Remember, with the right piece of gear, the “job” of podcasting will be much easier.
Peace,
Russ

I also wanted to purchase this one, in the end I decided to get the IO|14 because I do not patch that much ‘live’. I also checked out Yamaha’s firewire mixerboard which (although way bigger) has the advantage that it has build in compressors. Quite handy on the road, if you don’t mind lugging a A3 sized mixer with you.
