Podcast of the Week: Buzz Out Loud
This week’s Podcast of the Week is not an independent, but is from one of the biggies in the technology industry, CNET. It’s Buzz Out Loud, CNET’s podcast of indeterminant length. The hosts of Buzz Out Loud are Molly Wood and Tom Merritt. Jason Howell is the producer and sometime host. Up until last year, Veronica Belmont was a part of the show. I thought the loss of one of the host would make a big difference in the quality of the show. That couldn’t have been farther from the truth.
I first heard of BOL on This Week in Tech when Tom was a panelist. Leo said that Buzz Out Loud was the best tech podcast around. Well if the King of the technology podcast tells you that another show is the best around, you better listen.
The show is published daily and covers all the best tech news of the day. The audience, or Citizens of Buzztown, are a big part of the show and have even served as “co-hosts” for a few episodes at the end of 2007. The show has also created some of it’s own terminology like BOLcats, Molly Rants, JaMoTo and others. Be sure to check out the Buzz Out Loud Wiki for a whole lot more information on the show.
A recent addition to the show is live streaming video during the recording at 10:30am Pacific. A user, pb30, created a web page at WatchBOL.com where you can see a live feed of all the hosts as well as a chat room where you can interact with other listeners or even JaMoTo themselves. Often JaMoTo will ask questions of the chat room when recording the show to fill in any information they might be lacking.
I normally resist all big company produced podcasts like NPR. I prefer to stick with independently produced shows. Buzz Out Loud has changed my mind on that position, at least as far as CNET goes. I’m now listening to three other CNET podcasts; I’ll save those for another post.
