Free Podcast Host: MyPodcast.com

The first of the free podcast services to get tested was MyPodcast.com. I found the site through a Google search for “free podcast hosting”. Let’s get into the review.

MyPodcast LogoThe sign up was painless. You basically enter a name for your podcast; I chose “Daily Wonders”. Don’t ask me why. You also fill in a URL for your podcast; I chose http://dailywonders.mypodcast.com. You also fill in the usual username, password, display name, e-mail address and then click “Go To Next Step” button at the bottom of the screen. That’s it, you’re setup.

MyPodcast.com offers a recording program called, funny enough, MyPodcast Recorder. In the limited testing with the laptop that I used to test out the service, I couldn’t get the software to record with either the built-in microphone or the USB MicPlug that I used. I ended up recording the quick podcast in Audacity and then uploading through the web interface.

Posting the show was as simple as uploading the file, entering the episode name, show notes, uploading an image to be included with the post including where you want it to show up on the page. You can also choose when the episode is published. All pretty standard and what I expected. Then there is the part that makes the service free. MyPodcast.com inserts an advertisement into the podcast. It will put it in wherever you would like. You simply tell it the minutes and seconds of your show that you would like the advertisement. If you don’t care, you can leave it blank and they will insert it in the front end of your podcast.

The podcast page provided is very blog like with the post on the left and the sidebar on the right. Listeners can post comments on the page as well. There are links on the sidebar to subscribe to your new podcast in iTunes, My Yahoo, Google and a generic RSS feed link to subscribe in any other podcatcher. You can customize the template to include your own links and such on the sidebar.

Overall I liked the MyPodcast.com service. With the exception of the software that didn’t work, everything performed well. Be sure to check out my brief podcast that I posted to check out all the aspects of the service. If you don’t mind the advertisement inserted into your podcast, MyPodcast.com could be the right solution for your podcast.
