TalkShoe Quits Paying Podcasters
I was checking out the Typical Mac User podcast today and saw that Victor, the host of the show, was quiting his live show on Talk Shoe. What’s going on over at Talk Shoe?
Talk Shoe, if you haven’t heard of it, is a way to add interactivity to your podcast. Talk Shoe provides a phone number and show code that allows listeners to turn into callers. Rather than the listeners leaving voicemails and you playing them and pseudo interacting with the listener, with Talk Shoe you can talk to the listeners just like a live radio show.
When I first heard of Talk Shoe it made money by way of getting a bit of the pennies paid per minute to the phone number that the listeners used to call in. Later they offered free hosting for files, I believe with the hope of having more people call in to the phone number by luring existing shows to use the service. Later on Talk Shoe created a program whereby podcasters could get paid based on the number of downloads. I remember listening to Keith and the Girl talk about how Talk Shoe didn’t want their business. Too many downloads, no live callers. Talk Shoe also started selling advertising to replace their self serving ads. Or at least they tried to sell advertising.
Talk Shoe has now stopped playing the podcasters that use their service, their TalkCash program. Apparently the podcast advertising wasn’t lucrative enough and they were paying podcasters more than they were bringing in. That makes sense. Why should they? They’re still providing the same service to interact with listeners if that was the reason for using the service.
So, Talk Shoe is still providing the same services. They will host files; they will provide interactive podcasting; they won’t pay you.

Also the fact is that they announced the were stopping the payment plan (which is of course their right). However they also announced that they were not going to pay for shows that were produced in May. That to me was not right and I expressed my feelings to Talkshoe about it.
I support their right to do what they want with their pay plan or service, it is their business.
However I did not agree with the way they went about doing it and informing host of non payment for May. I expressed those facts with them directly.
That’s the bottom line for me, and it was not at all based “out of emotions” at all. I supported Talkshoe for more the 1.5 years and wish them the very best. We just had a difference of option. That’s it.

I think it is lame that hosts are just up and leaving talkshoe because they can’t afford to pay the bills. It’s funny that for all of the support a company like talkshoe has given towards podcasters over the past 2 years, that hosts are willing to leave after a snag like this.
For all of this support in the past, talkshoe gets the big F-U when they have to make the tough decision not to pay hosts. I guarantee there’s a reason for this.
Hosts just act out of their emotions from not getting paid, or from dave nelsen dropping the bombshell, and then they stop their shows in retaliation, and for that I think these hosts are lame.
