This week’s Podcast of the Week is not an independent, but is from one of the biggies in the technology industry, CNET. It’s Buzz Out Loud, CNET’s podcast of indeterminant length. The hosts of Buzz Out Loud are Molly Wood and Tom Merritt. Jason Howell is the producer and sometime host. Up until last year, Veronica Belmont was a part of the show. I thought the loss of one of the host would make a big difference in the quality of the show. That couldn’t have been farther from the truth.

I first heard of BOL on This Week in Tech when Tom was a panelist. Leo said that Buzz Out Loud was the best tech podcast around. Well if the King of the technology podcast tells you that another show is the best around, you better listen.

The show is published daily and covers all the best tech news of the day. The audience, or Citizens of Buzztown, are a big part of the show and have even served as “co-hosts” for a few episodes at the end of 2007. The show has also created some of it’s own terminology like BOLcats, Molly Rants, JaMoTo and others. Be sure to check out the Buzz Out Loud Wiki for a whole lot more information on the show.

A recent addition to the show is live streaming video during the recording at 10:30am Pacific. A user, pb30, created a web page at WatchBOL.com where you can see a live feed of all the hosts as well as a chat room where you can interact with other listeners or even JaMoTo themselves. Often JaMoTo will ask questions of the chat room when recording the show to fill in any information they might be lacking.

I normally resist all big company produced podcasts like NPR. I prefer to stick with independently produced shows. Buzz Out Loud has changed my mind on that position, at least as far as CNET goes. I’m now listening to three other CNET podcasts; I’ll save those for another post.

You can find Buzz Out Loud at http://bol.cnet.com.

So last week, I got to finally get down the the monthly Meetup for the Orange County Podcasters. The speaker at the meeting was Dan Klass of The Bitterest Pill. I’ve had a The Bitterest Pill in a couple of posts, see below, including the Podcast of the Week in September ’05. Dan stopped by to talk about his recent change to a “premium podcast” model. Listeners are asked to subscribe, not the RSS type subscription, but actually pay each month for the show. In return, Dan will put out 4 shows a month for the premium subscriber. The cost is a modest $4/month, a buck a show, a deal at half the cost. The free version of The Bitterest Pill will still be available, though it will be an abridged version of one of the premium shows. It’s a great model, assuming you can convert enough of the free subscribers to paid subscribers.

Click on the image above. It’s what reminded me to post about this. I was checking out Hulu and picked to watch the full length version of The Girl Next Door. Within the first two minutes of the movie, who pops up, Dan Klass.

Check out the video below to see the lions share of the presentation from the OC Podcasters Meetup. A lot of good information was disseminated. The presentation broke down into a sort of what’s wrong/right with podcasting. Get enough podcasters, meaning guys that like to hear themselves talk (present company included), and you can get off on some long tangents.

The latest free episode is the abridged version of Episode #120. The latest premium episode is #124 Aloha, Unicorn-Goat Boy. Free or paid, you’re not going to find a more entertaining podcast around.

I’ve been trying to get into web development. I’ve modified a few WordPress themes, tweaked a few CSS files, and my latest project in this realm is creating a web application with Django. Part of keeping myself motivated is listening to this week’s Podcast of the Week, Boagworld.

Boagworld is a podcast for those “Designing, developing and running web sites on a daily basis.” The podcast is hosted by Paul Boag and Marcus Lillington. Both are principals at a UK design firm called Headscape. I do run my own web sites, so I’m in that part of the demographic, and I’m looking to get into the other two areas of the podcast, the design and development, but you don’t have to be any of these to benefit from this podcast. The two run through news that have mostly to do with design, there is a section where they give their opinions on a topic and then an interview. The interviews are often the most interesting parts of the podcast.

Here’s a list of the guests I’ve heard recently:

Jason Beaird – Beautiful Design

Cameron Moll – Mobile Web

Dan Cederholm – Pixels, ems and percentages

Daniel Burka – About Digg

So as you can see , the guests are some of the most influential and interesting people doing work on the web today. You might think that this is just a commercial disguised as a podcast, but you couldn’t be more wrong. While the two bring information and insights to the podcast based on work done at Headscape, there is no pushing of their company’s services at all.

Check out Boagworld at http://www.boagworld.com/podcast and get educated in web design and development from two experts in the business. The latest show is number 109 and feature guest hosts Jon Hicks and John Oxton from the Rissington Podcast.

Enjoy!

I love a good audio book. I’m subscribed, thanks to Leo Laporte, to Audible.com and I’ve already “read” more books in the last 3 months than I did in all of the rest of 2007. While the plan I’m on at Audible allows me one book a month, there is a free alternative to get books in audio form and that’s Podiobooks.com. Serialized audiobooks delivered via custom RSS feeds. It’s a great service.

Which leads me to the podcast of the week, Quarter Share, by Nathan Lowell . Scott Sigler mentioned Quarter Share either in his podcast as a promo, or on his blog, but the name stuck in my head. So when I was looking for a new podiobook to consume, I jumped on this one and have not been disappointed. Here’s the description form the PodioBooks web site.

The 1st Trader’s Tale from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper…

When Ishmael Wang is orphaned by a flitter crash, he must make some hard decisions about how to survive in a Company-owned universe. With limited time and fewer options, he lands a job as the newest hand on the Solar Clipper Lois McKendrick and learns there’s more to life than making coffee. Join Ish, Pip, Big Bad Bev, and the rest of the Lois McKendrick’s crew as they sail the galaxy in search of profitable trade.

I’m just into episode number 5 and it really has me hooked. It appeals to the Trekkie in me and if I had to pick which Star Trek series that it reminded me of, it would have to be Deep Space Nine. Definitely futuristic, but so familiar in ways. I’m excited to see where it’s going.

You can subscribe to Quarter Share at PodioBooks.com or add this feed to your aggregator.

If you like Quarter Share, you can follow the adventures of Ishmael Wang in the follow up books, Half Share and Full Share. If you finish all three of the those books and still want more from Nathan Lowell, he has another book in the same universe called South Coast.

Happy “reading”.

If you are fan of Buzz Out Loud, the CNET podcast, you’re probably familiar with the host of this week’s Podcast of the Week. It’s Veronica Belmont, and the podcast is Mahalo Daily.

I don’t subscribe to many video podcasts. It takes a lot more effort to create a good video podcast than an audio one and most of them miss the mark for me. I’m willing to take a look at new ones, but so far I have a half dozen or so on the Mac Mini that I watch on a regular basis. Also, when a video podcast calls itself “daily” I don’t expect much. Fortunately Mahalo Daily delivers the goods.

Mahalo Daily is exactly the type of video podcast that I would create if:

1) I did’t have to worry about a day job, mortgage, food, or

B) If I had a face for video instead of one for audio.

Luckily for us, the viewers, Mahalo Daily is Veronica Belmont’s day job and she has the looks for video. The show is produced about 4 times a week and covers topics that are of interest to users of Mahalo.com. The topics are very diverse from yo-yo championships, how to drink, deep frying a turkey, CES coverage, dog training, and the latest episode, which I haven’t seen yet, a tour of a space junkyard. Each episode is entertaining and informative.

Mahalo Daily can be found http://daily.mahalo.com/ and you’ll see why this video podcast is one not to miss. And if you’re a fan of the hit Internet/YouTube song Chocolate Rain, be sure to check out Episode #30 and Veronia’s interview with Tay Zonday. Did I mention the diverse topics?

Over at Fat Guy Radio I’ve pretty much stopped creating regular podcasts. I’ve teamed up with a co-host, Jeff Ainslie, and started a new podcast called Fat 2 Fit Radio. I was thinking about what to do with Fat Guy Radio. So far I was just posting links back to the new blog and posted a couple of small articles.

Also recently I was thinking about something to do with Utterz. It’s a new microblogging platform that has an incredibly easy way to phone in a post. (More about this in a later post.) Also last week, Jeff and I, discussed running in show #14. Prepping for that show, I found a podcast called, funny enough, Podcasts for Running. I decided to combine these two things and started my own Couch to 5K program and chronicling it at Fat Guy Radio. That’s the long way around telling you to check out this week’s Podcast of the Week, Podcasts for Running.

Here’s a little excerpt from the site about the creator of the podcast, Robert Ullrey:

I am 43 living in Northern California and on my birthday I decided to start running again. I am following the Couch to 5 K in 9 Weeks Running Plan from Cool Running.com and each of these podcasts will follow the weekly program. I made them for myself, and will be running along with you during each of these weeks.

I’ve just started the program and found the podcast excellent. The music is kind of techno, which is not usually my thing. I’d probably listen to AC/DC while running if I had to pick myself, but I really liked it. The music pushed me, kept my pace up and was very good. I’ve only done the first week podcast, but there are 9 weeks available for you to complete the program. The podcast was created in 2006, but this one is timeless.

Check out Podcasts for Running at http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/podcasts/podcasts.html

and <corny>I’ll see you out the on the pavement. </corny>

Metamor City is a place where magic and technology co-exist. The characters are lovable vampires, wolverines, and other creatures that are dreamed up and put in podcast form by Chris Lester. I discovered this podcast in a promo at the end of a recent episode of 7th Son. I’m hooked and I’m hoping that Chris ups the frequency of shows from every two weeks to weekly.

Chris has created a world that stimulates the imagination, from the fantasy characters to the high tech vehicles that they speed around on in Metamor City. Give it a listen and see you’re as hooked as I am.

The podcast of the week, the first one of 2007, is related to a past podcast of the week, Keith and the Girl. Spooky is a regular guest on KATG and has recently started his own podcast. Already 5 episodes in, Spooky in the City looks a life through a recently single bachelor in the Big Apple. But Spooky is not just recently single, he’s recently single after a 10-some-odd year relationship and the whole thing came to an end when his girlfriend cheated on him. Now Spooky is forced to cook for himself, clean, wash, etc, all the things that his girlfriend used to do for him. Also as Spooky meets women and goes out on dates, he’s planning on ambushing them with a microphone and getting them on the show. Good luck with that . His appearances on KATG are always some of my favorites, and Spooky in the City is an extension of his awesomeness. (If that’s a word.)

Check out Spooky in the City; you won’t be sorry. Episode #5 is the latest episode as I write this and you can find the show information at http://www.myspace.com/spookyinthecity.

When you get all that gear for Christmas and you start to hook everything up, XLR, 1/4″, RCA, headphone, Inserts, microphone, compressor, limiter, etc., and it sounds like a screeching mess, it’s time to listen to Sine Language. Sine Language is a podcast about all things audio. It is hosted by Bruce Williams, Aussie audio engineer extraordinaire. I have been listening to this podcast since episode 1 and have found every single episode of some benefit. There are episodes about compression, MP3 file encoding, but my favorite two episodes have been #30 and #37. Both had to do with gain, levels and how to setup your mixer to get the highest levels with the least noise. I’ve saved these two episodes in my archive in case I need a refresher course or I can forward these two episodes to a new podcaster.

Bruce is done podcasting for the year, so you have a couple of weeks to catch up before he starts producing new episodes in 2007. Head on over to http://audio2u.com/sinelanguage.htm and make your podcast sound the best that it can. You won’t be sorry.
