A question came in that asked what I use to record my podcast. I had that posted over at the old Podcaster’s Friend site. It’s changed since then, so here it is.

It’s not the fanciest rig in the world, but it gets the job done. Currently my voice is captured by a MXL 990 microphone. It’s been discontinued, but there are similar condenser microphones for about the same price available. This was the microphone that I bought a long time ago and I continue to like it more than the more expensive microphones that I have. The audio is fed via XLR cable to a M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB audio interface. This one replaces the Tascam US122 that doesn’t have the best drivers for Windows Vista that I use on the Podcast Studio computer. The microphone stand is a basic desktop variety. I use probably the cheapest headphones around, the Behringer HPM1000. They work well enough.

Software wise, as I mentioned, I use a Windows Vista box. I record Skype audio with Callburner. It captures excellent audio without the hassle of the wires and complexity of a mix-minus setup. Check it out. I highly recommend it. I also record a backup out of the Line-out on the Fast Track to a portable music player with a Line-in jack. That’s just in case Callburner fails, or more commonly, Skype fails. Post production and editing is done using an old copy of Sony Vegas initially. It’s tightened up further by my partner using Audacity. The whole podcast is sent through The Levelator to smooth out the highs and lows before encoding using iTunes and uploading to the server using Filezilla.

That’s about it. Don’t forget, you can ask questions of any type by using the Ask A Question link above.

Check out the podcast rig over at Shelly’s Podcast. Shell Brisbin is the host of Shelly’s Podcast and she is also the Editor of Blogger & Podcaster Magazine.

Shelly’s podcast rig is comprised of some high end pieces combined with some low end mixed in as well. Let’s start at the top with the mic.

Shelly is using the Heil PR40 on a standard desktop mic stand. Looks like she’s also using a standard foam wind sock on the microphone. Headphones are plugged into a Marantz PMD 660, flash based recorder, that is used for recording. The mic is plugged into a Behringer UB802, which she calls the “podcaster special”. My opinion, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. There’s a reason that these mixers are so popular with podcasters. They’re cheap and they work. She also has a Behringer compressor, which she says she’s not using. Shelly also mentions that is doing the compression in post production. It looks as if she also has an iPod Nano plugged into the mixer. Could be used for playing music or other audio into the podcast at the appropriate time.

Send me a picture of your podcast studio and what’s in it and I’ll post it to the blog for all to see.

I came across this video through a Google alert. It’s a video tour of the TrailCast studio. Bob from TrailCast said it was okay to share this, so here it is, via YouTube. The heart of the TrailCast studio is the Behringer Eurorack UB802, probably the most ubiquitous mixer used by podcasters. Feeding the mixer is an AKG Perception 100, a large diaphram condenser microphone. The show is recorded on an Edirol R1 and edited using Audacity. Bob has the studio setup in the bathroom with “acoustic foam” around the room to cut down the echo. It’s an ingenious way to get the hum of the computer out of his recordings. Watch the video and see if you can use one of the many great ideas used to record The TrailCast. Pay particular attention to the way he records his Skype phone calls.
